IP in Africa - Begining from Ghana

Intellectual Property (IP) is the intangible assets that result from the human mind and creativity. New inventions such as intelligent systems, cars, medical diagnostic systems, smart phones, smart processes of doing things; paintings, sculpturing, play, movies, music, brand names, trademarks, business policies are all forms of IP. These IPs therefore need to be protected for better commercial and non-commercial benefits from its right of ownership.

Due to the power IP holds in the development of the world's economy, IP Education has become a crucial subject to the socioeconomic development of every country. However, all the other Continents in the world except Africa have proven the enormous benefits of IP Education. I believe that Africa has a lot to do in-terms of IP. Industries are growing everyday and innovations are increasing all over the world including Africa, so definitely there is the need for some sort of protection for the intangible asserts these Industries develop everyday. And of course, the only way to do that is through IP.

Africa, the center for all natural resources needed to be at the peek of economic development by now. However, Africa is still at the verge of economic break-through. IP since it discovery in the 18th century has made other parts of the world develop rapidly. So Africa needs to take IP seriously. Samsung, Apple, Google, Coca cola, Hyundai, LG, Microsoft, IBM and hundreds of top known brand names are from outside Africa. These brands have been able to keep their popularity and industrial successes all over the world because of IP. They have contributed to the economic development of their respective countries of origin or establishment. For instance, Samsung is in Korea and Coca cola in the United States.

IPPA is established to achieve a particular vision. We are seeking economic development through Intellectual Property Right Education. We want to help our domestic Small & Medium Enterprises (SME) understand that there is hope for the future if and only if they are willing to embrace IP protection in their businesses, understand how to promote their brands internationally without fear of competition with other industrial giants.
We want to promote this awareness because Africa is now developing in all aspects of its sectors so it needs to embrace Intellectual Property Protection.

    Analysis

  • From the diagram, it can be seen that greater part of revenue generated from IP protection goes to USA , China and other developed countries in Asia, Europe, South and North America etc. However, Africa and to be precise Ghana is not making much from this area for her economic development.
